Storyboarding

In thursdays lessons we started to storyboard our video. Tom and i found this quite tricky, getting all the different shots down to the music and trying to get different shots in with the different parts of the video, however once we got going, we came up with a few good shot idea's and we just now have to think about the camera shot angles. Now we have visited our possible locations this will be much easier to visualise. Here is a photo of Tom and i doing our storyboard.

How i am feeling about the project

Positives

Something i am looking forward to is comparing our finished video to the original, and how they compare and contrast as this may be interesting.

Negatives

I'm Worried about not getting permission to film on the dump/construction site, as we may not get it, and this would mean we would have to re-think our whole idea.

Solutions to problems

Re-think idea. Film at the back of my garden, near my tree house, and in a field/forest area.

Hurtwood House Music Video

This is the music video from Hurtwood House, i chose this out of the others as i really like how they have made their video filled with such a lively atmosphere. You can see that they have planned each shot carefully, and thought about the camera angles and positions, to create the atmosphere, in what i can imagine can only be a small room, which they have made look like a big club full of dancers.

Pretty Woman

Everyone knows the story of Pretty Woman, and the concept in this film is very similar to that in our video. Julia Roberts, playing a young prostitute - Vivian, goes from living in the slums of Beverly Hills, barely scrapping enough money for rent, to living the high life, with Richard Gere, playing a middle aged work-a-holic, giving Vivian the money to shop, and experience the ins and outs of the higher class in Beverly Hills. Though underneath her new exterior, still lies the young lady, with no educational background, and a poor upbringing.

Our music video may not be as deep as this, however the connection still lies. Our performer is nicely dressed but belongs to the dump, and Pretty Woman is beautifully dressed, but is a hooker.

location photography

Today we went out to take pictures of our locations and start to think about our camera angles. We went to the scrap yard on Newmarket road and milton dump. They were both very relaxed about letting us take pictures so hopefully it will be the same case for filming. We also asked if we could take some pictures of the landfill site in milton but the manager was not there so we got his phone number and were told to ring him on monday.

This exercise was useful as it gave us a chance to go to our locations and have a look around. It also gave us some more inspiration for other shots and angles.

here are some of our pictures

Cuts in a Professional, Longroad and Hurtwood house music video

How many cuts does a professional music video, a longroad student video and a hurtwood house video have in the first 30 seconds and the first minute.

Professional video :
  • 30 seconds - 24 cuts
  • 1 minute - 48 cuts
Longroad student video :
  • 30 seconds - 2 cuts
  • 1 minute - 7 cuts
Hurtwood house video :
  • 30 seconds - 16 cuts
  • 1 minute - 29 cuts
As you can see the amount of cuts in a Longroad music video have a much lower than the amount of cuts in a professional video, and Hurtwood house is somewhat in between. This means that when we are sorting out our shot list, we really need to make sure that we plan this well and have as many shots as possible to make it as interesting as possible.

Chris Cunningham

On monday we watched a documentary video about Chris Cunningham, it was really inspiring about the way he thinks and all his thought processes he goes through in the making of his video's. I found quite odd when he said he went into the film industry to find out more about how everything works, and not to become the greatest film maker. But obviously, with his growing passion and skills he he slowly progressing into something, weird, great and wonderful.

Pitch Feedback

Today we pitched to the class for our idea. We feel it went well however could been better if we had finished our moodboard for "I'm good, I'm gone".

Feedback for Im good Im gone:
  • I like the empty room idea.
  • Detailed idea. Using the lyrics for inspiration.
  • Lighting idea is good.
  • Costume and props are possible.
  • Dark clothe good contrast with white room.
  • Could have different locations to keep interest.
  • Empty room - good keeping it simple
  • Could leave it ironic by leaving her next to the phone at the end.
  • I like the idea of one location and i think if you keep it simple it will work
  • I like the simplicity.
  • Good ideas for camera shots and lighting.
  • Hard to fit with the track.
Questions:
  • where is the white room?
  • what shot styles where you thinking of?
  • costumes?

From this feedback we have learned that our overall concept may struggle to keep the viewers interest. We have also realised that we may need to re think the idea in terms of the white room as this may be hard to find. This idea was our second idea and therefore we did not spend as much time on it.

Feedback for No social:
  • Like the concept of the dump and the girl in nice bright clothes.
  • Costume sounds interesting.
  • Camera work sounds good.
  • Like the abstract idea.
  • Quiet detailed ideas for the video.
  • Getting the ideas from lyrics is a good idea.
  • Nice idea.
  • Good idea.
  • Location could be difficult.
  • Setting and mes-un-scene
  • Clear idea
  • Good description of the feel of the idea.
  • Abstract.
  • Clear concept.
  • Urban.
  • Set idea is very interesting.
  • Angles + edgy.
  • Realistic and possible.
Questions:
  • Where's the dump?
  • Construction site - how will you get this?
  • How are you going to get scrap yard to film in?
  • Relying on a dump - maybe bring your own objects?
  • Where is the construction site?
  • Where is it filmed?
  • Who's acting?
  • Just one location?
This feedback has made us confident that our idea will work. It is very positive however we also learned that we will defiantly have to think it trough a lot and make sure we have everything sorted before we go to location.

Treatment for No Social

Moodboard for No Social

This is our mood board for No Social, you can see in it how our idea evolved and changed. We started thinking about something completely abstract using lots of colour and lights and paint, however then we watched the actual video and they had already used these idea's so we wanted to come up with something fresh, but keeping to the concept of the song, we still liked the idea of lights, however we were thinking about places to shoot the video and baring in mind the lyrics 'The dog dressed in clothes is still a dog' and we came up with the idea of a girl dressed in nice dresses at a dump or construction site. Using the idea of her being the dog dressed in clothes - really nice clothes, however she still has nowhere to go, she may still be a dump dressed in rags etc.

Jasmine's video after winning BBC Blast competition

Jasmine's Winning video

Tuesday 19th Jan - Interview with BBC Blast winner: Jasmine

On Tuesday Jasmine came to our class at Coleridge to offer her advice on making a music video. It was really good to get her guidance and suggestions on our music videos, and the processes we will have to follow to make sure we create a video of standard. Jasmine was just 18 when submitting her video to BBC Blast - the video that she complete for part of her coursework at her college. Herself, a long with a few other girls all put in so much effort to get the piece to a high standard (see below).
After winning the best music video, she had the great pleasure and chance to work with the 'Black Dog' company and directing another video with a budget of £3,000! In this process she said she realised how important it was to plan it out all properly - she refers to this method as 'Treatment' - visuals, keys lyrics/key quotes, storyboard etc. In her brainstorming process she said it was really helpful to take references from other songs, not to steal them but to borrow and get inspiration from them.
Some major advice jasmine gave us was about shot listing and storyboarding. She said it was useful to keep a shot list, as it has the times and lyrics of some points in the song, so it is easy to work out where you want each scene to happen. Also, storyboarding is all about making every key point accurate, and also to try doing these on post-its so if it doesn't work out when you come to edit, you can move it out the storyboard and perhaps put it in somewhere else.

Things I have learned:
  • don't get too focused on one shot
  • be in control - love it - get involved
  • make it fun
  • get everyone involved
  • keep people up to date - email etc.
  • keep any documents up to date - dates etc.

Personal Statement

Technical Skills.
The technical skills i have gained in and out of college are:
Editing on FinalCut and Photoshop eg..Film opening and Risk Video.
Photography eg. Risk Video

Artistic/Creative Skills.
The creative skills i have are being able to create costumes for example in my Film Opening, i am also able to do makeup for shooting footage etc like in my film opening.

'Special Powers'
My something 'special' i can bring to video's is being able to dance, as i danced for about 6 years in previous dance classes in and out of school, also singing and acting as i have been in many drama groups and choirs through out my primary and secondary school years, and have played the principal part, and have previously taken singing lessons for a couple of years.

Previous Longroad student music videos

i like the beginning of this video especially, as i like the abstract ribbons in the dark, i also like how the theme of the ribbons flow throughout this piece.
However, the lip synch is a little bit out, and they could have perhaps worked on this a little more and it is a close up of a girl singing, i think if it wasn't a close up this would not be as much a problem, but nevertheless, i think it's a good concept.

Louis and Jahmal's Lip Synch Video

This is Louis and Jahmal's lip synch practice music video. Unfortunately due to illness i have missed a number of practice tasks, however, i have talked to Louis and Jahmal and the purpose of their practice music video, and have explained the process of it, and steve has also demonstrated how to do this to me, and mentioned that with pips lip synch is a whole lot easier.

My Generation Video - Friday 15th

Today at Coleridge, as a class we put together a music video for My Generation, i was good fun putting it all together, and later on we will be editing it, and that shall get posted on here at a later date. Everyone got given their own part to do, and i was a backing singer/dancer singing the the lines 'Talking about my generation'. It was good fun, though was quite hard to constantly act over excited, as you can see from the photos (above) when we weren't filming, an over excited Emma and Tilly was not the case.

Damien Rice - 9 Crimes

I really like this video, i think it has a good concept and tells a moving story from beginning to end. I like all the different camera shots - i like how it begins with the a close up of Lisa Hannigan's face, and ends with a close up of her face in pieces, a long with the close ups of when he is trying to grab the bit of string she is attached to. Also the long shots on the middle of the video, where you can see him taking her by the string and walking her down the street. The setting at the beginning gets you intruiged, and it fits perfectly with the lyrics of the song 'leave me out with the waste' which sets you up for the rest of the song. I think my main attraction is the fact that Lisa Hannigan's head is floating throughout most of the video on a piece of string like a helium balloon, and i think the editing for get this effect is really well done, and the editing at the end of the video when her face gets broken into pieces, and you see close ups of the parts of her face left lying on the floor. This video is very gripping, and the performance that the two put on is very touching, and keeps the viewers attention throughout the video.
